high blood sugar: symptoms and control

Diabetes – A Killer Disease

Diabetes or diabetes mellitus is a disease in which a person suffers from high levels of blood glucose often referred as blood sugar in the body. It is caused due to the lack of insulin production within the body cells of a person. The main causes of diabetes is family history , environmental factors like food that a person eats as well as the immune system of the person.

Why should I be concerned?

Types of Diabetes

  • Type 1 Diabetes: In Type 1 Diabetes there is no insulin that is being produced by the body. It is usually found in children who developed this problem since birth or at a very young age of 5-6 years.
  • Type 2 Diabetes: Type 2 Diabetes is the most common type of diabetes found in people. During this type of diabetes, it is observed that the body cells of the person does not receive any glucose due to which insulin sensitivity is reduced. The glucose present in the body gets mixed in the blood causing the rise in the blood sugar levels.

What are the Symptoms of Diabetes?

Both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes have similar kind of symptoms but in the case of Type 2 diabetes the symptoms are developed over a period of time.

  • The most common symptom of diabetes includes, excessive urination, less or blurred vision, the person becomes thirsty at very short intervals of time, weight loss, lack of energy, tiredness, lack of interest and concentration.
  • Some of the early signs of diabetes can also be seen when a person develops sleep-related problems like sleep apnea. Due to sleep deprivation the amount of growth hormone decreases which causes the accumulation of fats in the body specifically near the abdomen thus giving birth to obesity that will ultimately lead towards diabetes.

How to control Diabetes

In order to control diabetes, a person needs to reduce the glucose level in the blood. It is advisable to consult a doctor and treat it on time else it can become dangerous by leading to Heart disease/stroke.

  • Oral medications are prescribed by the doctors in the case of Type 2 diabetes while in the case of Type 1 diabetes a daily visit to the doctor is essential for proper medication.
  • A well-balanced diet, weight management and proper sleep is advised by the doctors as sleep plays an important role in curing diabetes. Untreated Sleep Apnea or Sleep deprivation in a diabetic patient can lead to fatal health consequences like Kidney failure, heart disease etc.

If your diabetes is not getting controlled despite continuous medication, it is advisable to get yourself checked for Sleep Apnea. Visit a Sleep physician in your locality and most likely he may advise you to undergo polysomnography / sleep study to confirm the prevalence of Sleep Apnea. Early treatment for Sleep Apnea will help you prevent or delay the progression of Type 2 diabetes, reduce diabetic complications, reduce the potential risk of heart attack, stroke, improve daytime energy and glucose control thereby improving your quality of life.
