When to consider taking CPAP treatment for Sleep apnea?

How does CPAP-titration works?

CPAP-titration study is a sleep study where you will take a trail with CPAP machine and mask.

  1. Typically, when you arrive at the sleep center, the sleep technologist will spend some time finding you the most fitted and suitable mask. It is important because if you are not comfortable with your mask; the chances are that your treatment may fail.

  2. After the right mask has been found, it is connected to a tube and then to a machine. While you are asleep, the technologist will remotely increase and decrease the pressure you are receiving to find out the pressure which is most suitable for you- i.e. the minimum pressure that stops you from snoring and normalize your breathing allowing you to have the most restful sleep.

CPAP titration study is generally performed on the same night as the diagnostic sleep study. However, in some instances, where the diagnosis is not clear, you will need to  have a second titration study.

Things your sleep physician will take into account when recommending CPAP therapy for sleep apnea may include:

  • Your fitness, body weight and the amount of physical activities you achieve in a day

  • The amount and the frequency of alcohol you usually consume

  • Medications, especially sedatives, if you take

  • Whether you had your tonsils surgically removed

  • Whether you are a cigarette smoker

  • If you have nasal congestion or any breathing related problem

  • The anatomy of your airway and neck circumference

  • Other medical conditions you have, such as any heart or lung disease

  • How troublesome your snoring is to others ( such as if your partner can tolerate it or you both sleep separately because of its loudness)

  • Your occupation (if you are a driver or your work involves a heavy machinery, sleep apnea can be rather more dangerous)

How will it improve your snoring and OSA symptoms?
