Sleep Apnea Risk Factors in Men

It used to be that if someone tells you, you snored last night, you would take it as more of an annoyance rather than anyone really concerned about your health and well being.

Besides, there is a common misconception in Indian society that snoring is the sign of deep and sound sleep. Unfortunately, it is just the reverse. Loud snoring could be an indication of a serious sleep disorder called Sleep Apnea. Such disruptions in snooze, not only leads to poor quality sleep but impacts our day with symptoms like day time sleepiness, poor concentration, restlessness and fatigue.

Even though obstructive sleep apnea can occur in anyone, irrespective of age, gender and family history, the classic patients of obstructive sleep apnea are believed to be a group of middle aged and overweight Males. Below listed are some of the common risk factors for Sleep Apnea in Men.

  1. Circumference of Neck: If the size of the neck is 17 inches or more in men, it is an indication they are at increased risk of Obstructive sleep apnea as thick neck causes narrowing of the airway too.

  2. Excess of Weight or Obesity: Excessive weight cause fat deposits around the neck that may obstruct breathing. However, it is not necessary that only obese men suffer from this condition; thin people might also develop Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

  3. Narrowed Airway: If you have inherited a naturally narrow throat, your tonsils or adenoids might enlarge, blocking your airways and causing a sleep disorder.

  4. Age: Obstructive sleep apnea is more common in men who ages between 45 and 65. Nevertheless, it is common among people of all ages.

  5. Smoking and Alcohol Use: Men who take alcohol and smoke are thrice more likely to have obstructive sleep apnea than anyone else. These substances relax the muscles in your throat increasing the risk of certain sleep disorders to occur.

  6. Family History: Men with a family history of Sleep Apnea are at a higher risk of developing this condition than others.

  7. Medical Conditions: Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Heart attacks and strokes- there is a strong association of these medical conditions with Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Hence treating this disorder is not only a question of improving sleep quality and ending snoring but also decreasing the risk of more serious diseases.
