There are many sleep disorders that might debilitate your health. Few of the major ones are discussed below.

  1. Insomnia: This is the most common sleep disorder found among people, especially adults. Insomnia is defined as the inability to get the right amount of sleep, which causes tiredness and weakness the next morning. It can be caused due to stress, anxiety, any other health problems or lack of exercise. The best way to tackle insomnia is, by following a healthy and improved lifestyle. Drinking a large amount of coffee can also increase the risk of insomnia.

  1. Hypersomnia: Where insomniacs find it difficult sleeping, hypersomniacs find it difficult staying awake. This condition is the exact opposite of insomnia. It is a sleeping disorder that can cause a person to sleep excessively. People who suffer from this debilitating disorder fall asleep at odd times such as while working or driving.

  1. Narcolepsy: It is a chronic sleeping disorder that can cause tiredness and uncontrollable sleep attacks anytime during the day. A person suffering from Narcolepsy will feel as sleepy as someone who hasn’t slept for 48 hours straight. The disorder is very rare in kids and is usually found in adults. There are two types of Narcolepsy – Narcolepsy with Cataplexy and Narcolepsy without Cataplexy. Cataplexy is a kind of stroke that can cause a sudden loss of muscle tone or sometimes, even paralysis, although you might still be fully conscious and aware through the episode.

  1. Sleep apnea: Sleep apnea is perhaps the most notorious amongst sleep disorders. The reason being, while it might sound seemingly harmless, sleep apnea has the potential to be fatal. Even if it might not kill you directly, sleep apnea can open the Pandora’s box to a plethora of diseases that can even cause death. A person suffering from sleep apnea faces difficulty in breathing during the sleep. Sleep apnea makes one feel exhausted during the daytime. Hands down, Sleep apnea is one of the most serious and life-threatening sleeping disorders. Sleep apnea can be best treated with the help of CPAP.

  1. Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS): It is a sleeping disorder that can cause discomfort while moving your legs and arms during the sleep. Few of the common symptoms of RLS disorder are distressing sensation deep within legs, repetitive jerking of legs during sleep, worsening leg pain, etc.

If you face any of the above sleeping disorders, visit a sleep clinic and consult a sleep doctor immediately. After a complete examination by the doctor, he/she may suggest you the following tests:

  • Polysomnography – a sleep study

  • Electroencephalogram (EEG)

  • Genetic blood testing (In rare cases of Narcolepsy)

You should understand that sleeping disorder is neither a simple nor a serious issue. But, you should take immediate treatment so that you can avoid the worsening of your health condition.
